Brief

SUGAR is sexy, superbly successful, stimulating, sweet and synonymous for a society of hyper consumption and addiction to instant gratification on all levels of life. It is as well the starting point for this year’s AA Visiting School Hong Kong as we will be working closely with the maker of actual and virtual sweet dreams. From the simple extraction and refining of fructose into sugar in the beginning of the 19th century to the largest bottling plants for Coca Cola – the once sugar producing, now property tycoon company Taikoo / Swire is our starting point.

Our site is speculative – narrative and at the same time real. It critically examines our cities as they now exist in a self-referencing bubble of consumption, coated in entertainment and wrapped in a digital infrastructure. We live in a new electronically permeated, augmented and mediated landscape, framed by biological addiction, mental hyper-activity and electronic stimuli. We allow and enjoy continuous stimulation of our optic nerves through a myriad of optical devices, immersing ourselves in the likes of Oculus, Virtual Reality and Augmentation. We experience and see daily more unbuilt virtual space than actual architectural physical environment. We consume not only electronically, but physically more than ever before in human history. We are sugar addicted in digital, physical and biological form.

Our mission is to develop a series of models that fully indulge consumptions and exuberance virtually and actually. At the same time we propose through the design of architectural interfaces a critical statement and joyous exploration of SUGAR. The AA Visiting School this year will develop, together with the participants, strategies in the cross–disciplinary fields of Architecture, Computer Science, Art, Engineering and Interactive Design.

Program

We will be working in three elements. Firstly, we will organise a series of visits in Hong Kong and Shenzhen to maker and hacker spaces creating digital niches. These are our collaborators, ranging from the famous Makerbay to the infamous DimSumLabs.

Secondly, we will organise a series of skill-up sessions with our tutors, engaged and internationally renowned robotic designers, drone pilots, inventors, story tellers, jacks of all trades and mavericks in the articulation of a new playground for all design industries.

Lastly, we will break into small teams to deliver focused and provocative projects. The school will be accompanied by lecturers who come from all fields of design, biology, chemistry and art, bridging traditionally established boundaries.

Director
Tobias Klein

Tobias Klein works in the fields of Architecture, Art, Design and interactive Media Installation. His work generates a syncretism of contemporary CAD/CAM technologies with site and culturally specific design narratives, intuitive non-linear design processes, and historical cultural references.

Before joining City University Hong Kong in the role as interdisciplinary Assistant Professor in the School of Creative Media and the architectural department, he was the Unit Master of the Diploma 1 Studio at the Architectural Associ¬ation in London and ran a Media Studies class at the AA 2006-2014. He has lectured and given workshops internationally (Madrid, Spain – Lund, Sweden – Berlin,Germany – TU Munich, Germany …) and was an invited critic at Ecole Spé¬ciale d’Architecture – Paris, The Bartlett, Cambridge, Brighton University, Oxford Brookes, London Southbank, Greenwich and Nottingham to name a few in¬stances. He became an appointed Guest Professor at the TU Innsbruck; Stu¬dio 3, Institute for experimental architecture in 2010-12 and lectured at the Royal College of Art, (2007-2010).

The resulting works of his studio are exhibited international with examples being in the collection of the Antwerp Fashion Museum, the London Science Museum, the V&A, the Bellevue Arts Museum, Museum of Moscow and Vancouver. He is lecturing and published internationally with most recent articles focusing on the translation from craftsmanship to digital manufacturing.

Cesar Harada

Cesar Harada is a French-Japanese environmentalist, inventor and entrepreneur based in Hong Kong. CEO of MakerBay (Hong Kong MakerSpace for Social and Environmental Impact), Scoutbots and Protei INC (Ocean Robotics), Cesar dedicates his life to exploring and protecting the ocean with open technologies. Protei is a shape-shifting sailing robot, a wind-powered maritime drone that is remotely controlled or automated that will collect ocean data or transport clean-up equipment. Cesar is a former MIT Project Leader, TED Senior Fellow, GOOD 100, IBM Figure of Progress, Unreasonable at Sea Fellow, Shuttleworth foundation and Ocean Exchange grantee. Cesar opened the Ocean Track for COP21 Climate Talks Action Day in Paris with Ban Ki-Moon, French President Hollande and Jack Ma. His TED talks have more than 1 million views and are translated in more than 20 languages. Cesar won the Ars Electronica Golden Nica [NEXT IDEA] with his Masters graduation project from the Royal College of Arts, London in 2009. He has been teaching Masters at the Goldsmiths University of London, Versailles Architecture School in France and has lectured all over the world. Cesar believes that nature, human and technology can thrive in harmony.

Victor Leung

Victor Leung completed BA(Architectural Studies) in The University of Hong Kong and is currently pursuing Master of Science degree in Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Design and Computation. His focus on the computational side of architecture specialize in wood construction. With a background in computer programming, modeling and carpentry, he laid the foundation of a privately funded research and the company AWAWA Ltd., designing and building luxury detailed, free-form wood structures with parametrically detailed joints for automated CNC machining. His works had been used in various geometry computation workshops as study examples and are highly favored by architects and designers. He had worked on various discipline including architecture, installation art, CNC machining, electronics, robotics and microprocessors.

Before joining the Architectural Association, he was leading ADS1 (2007-2010) at the Royal College of Art, London. Today, he is an interdisciplinary professor combining Architecture and New Media art and Design at the School of Creative Media City University. The resulting works of his studio and students are exhibited international with examples being in the collection of the Antwerp Fashion Museum, the London Science Museum, the V&A, the Bellevue Arts Museum, Museum of Moscow and Vancouver. Ferdinand Fritz‘s working methodology defines the very much based on the specificity of chance and error and defined. The dialogue between performance and interaction of people is a very important concept at the work of Ferdinand Fritz. At the moment Ferdinand Fritz teaches at the University of Innsbruck, Institute for experimental architecture ./studio3 and operates at snohetta Innsbruck. The connection between theory and the built environment is to be read as a challenge and to be regarded as continuous development, because as defined, for him, architecture is still, by the activation of space exploration and the active space implementation. The experiment as the top approach, as the lead motivation to define and test new space in connection between music, art and architecture.

Victor Leung completed his BA (Architectural Studies) at The University of Hong Kong and is currently pursuing his Master of Science degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Design and Computation. His work focuses on the computational techniques in representing and communicating robotic assembly for DIY and Makers Culture. Victor’s background is in architectural design, computer programming, CAD CAM modeling and carpentry; he has designed a few wood structures with parametrically detailed joints using CNC machining. Victor is an active member in the Rhino-Grasshopper community, developing scripts and tool chains for parametric design. He has taught classes and workshops at HKU, AA (Visiting School), UTAS and MIT in topics ranging from computational geometry and parametric design for architects to digital fabrication and rapid prototyping and DIY robotics. He has worked in various disciplines including architecture, installation art, CNC machining, electronics, robotics and microprocessors.
